Resume : The architecture of biocompatible nanoparticles allows a development of novel molecular
probes with multimodality for simultaneous application in different imaging techniques, e.g., optical
imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), X-ray, electron
paramagnetic resonance (EPR) imaging, etc. These probes open new trends in development of
multimodal imaging instruments – the future of bioimaging. The present study describes a synthesis
of several original nanohybrids for multimodal imaging. They are based on organic/inorganic-coated
metal nanoparticles, dendrimers, ion chelators, paramagnetic fatty acids, and spin-labeled
nitrosoureas and triazenes. The probes are functionalized with different ligands attached on their
surface or incorporated into the structure. The nanohybrids are divided in two groups according to
their spectral characteristics. The probes from the first group are characterized with strong
photoluminescence and MRI contrast signals and could be applied simultaneously in fluorescent
imaging and MRI. The probes from the second group are characterized with strong MRI and EPR
signals and could be applied simultaneously in MRI and EPR imaging. The structure of some
nanoparticles allows an approximate calculation of their concentration in moles, which is beneficial
for dose-dependent analyses in the life science. All materials were tested for biocompatibility and
applied in the imaging of molecular targets on cells and animals.
