Kanno Molecular\nImaging Center, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, NIRS, 4-9-1 Anagawa, Inage, Chiba\n263-8555, Japan *Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Thracian University, Stara Zagora,\nResume : The architecture of biocompatible nanoparticles allows a development of novel molecular\nprobes with multimodality for simultaneous application in different imaging techniques, e.g., optical\nimaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), X-ray, electron\nparamagnetic resonance (EPR) imaging, etc. These probes open new trends in development of\nmultimodal imaging instruments – the future of bioimaging. The present study describes a synthesis\nof several original nanohybrids for multimodal imaging. They are based on organic/inorganic-coated\nmetal nanoparticles, dendrimers, ion chelators, paramagnetic fatty acids, and spin-labeled\nnitrosoureas and triazenes. The probes are functionalized with different ligands attached on their\nsurface or incorporated into the structure. The nanohybrids are divided in two groups according to\ntheir spectral characteristics. The probes from the first group are characterized with strong\nphotoluminescence and MRI contrast signals and could be applied simultaneously in fluorescent\nimaging and MRI. The probes from the second group are characterized with strong MRI and EPR\nsignals and could be applied simultaneously in MRI and EPR imaging. The structure of some\nnanoparticles allows an approximate calculation of their concentration in moles, which is beneficial\nfor dose-dependent analyses in the life science.
