内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Several radical scavenging chemicals including dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), n-acetylcysteine (NAC), ascorbate (AsA) and RibCys [2,S-D-ribo-(1',2',3',4'-tetrahydroxybutly)-thizolidine-(R)-ca-riboxylic acid] were evaluated for their ability to alter the genotoxicity (lethality and mutagenicity) of high LET carbon beam (290 MeV/:, LET = 100 KeV/μ m). Of these, AsA (5 mM) appeared to be the most promising in that it reduced mutant yields without affecting survival. NAC and RibCys also showed promise. The maximum reduction in mutant yield with the protocols used for AsA was about 50%. Asa effectively reduced mutation even when added after irradiation. Our working hypothesis is based on work of Koyama et al. 1 who found that IR, in their case X-rays could induce stable organic radicals, which were inactivated by AsA, which were especially important for mutagenicity, and , by implication, the carcinogenicity of ionizing radiation.
