内容記述 | By back-scattering laser photons off partially-stripped ion beams at the LHC the Gamma Factory (GF) will produce photons of ∼ 10 MeV to 1 GeV with fluxes of $10^{16~18}$. $\sim 10^{23~25} photons per year is many orders of magnitude greater than existing accelerator light sources and far greater than current and planned electron and proton fixed target experiments. Its discovery potential is determined via “dark Compton scattering,” γe → eX, where X is a new, weakly-interacting particle. For dark photons and other new gauge bosons with masses 1~100 MeV, the GF could discover extremely weakly-interacting particles with a few hours of data and probe couplings as low as $\sim 10^{−9}$ in one year, which would be lower than all other terrestrial experiments and highly complementary to astrophysical probes. We outline experimental realization requirements and determine the sensitivity reach for various experimental configurations. |
