内容記述 | Anion-conducting polymer electrolyte membrane (AEM) fuel cells have attracted much attention because of significant advantages for Pt free and high-power generation fuel cell systems. In recent years, we have developed imidazolium-type AEMs using the radiation-grafting technique. The prepared AEMs exhibited both sufficient ion conductivity and alkaline stability. However, in general, AEMs were decomposed by the attack of OH radicals produced during fuel cell operation. In this study, a crosslinking structure was introduced into the graft polymers in order to improve the chemical stability of the AEMs. Poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films were irradiated with -rays from 60Co source in Ar atmosphere with a dose of 80 kGy. The irradiated ETFE films were immersed into monomer solutions consisting of comonomers of 2-methyl-N-vinylimidazole (MVIm) and styrene (St) wtih divinylbenzene (DVB) with 0.5 ~ 5 wt% as a crosslinker. The graft-polymerization for 2 ~ 5 h at 60 ºC followed by N-alkylation gave MVIm/St/DVB-grafted AEMs with grafting degrees of 37 ~ 97% exhibited ion exchange capacities of 0.9 to 1.9 mmol/g, water uptakes of 15 ~ 49%, and ionic conductivities of 6 ~ 197 mS/cm at 60 ºC, respectively. The relative weight loss of the AEMs before and after the chemical oxidation in the Fenton solution (3% H2O2, 2 ppm FeSO4) gradually increased with increase in the ion conductivity of the AEMs. However, the relative weight loss of the MVIm/St/DVB-grafted AEMs was suppressed to approximately 1/4 of the corresponding non-crosslinked AEMs. Furthermore, we will report that the effects of crosslinking structure on the durability of the PEMs in the alkaline fuel cell operation. |
