内容記述 | [Purpose] Depth-of-interaction (DOI) detection is a promising solution to improve the spatial resolution and its uniformity over the entire field-of-view (FOV). Although DOI detection technologies have been used in small ring PET systems, the impact of DOI technology on imaging performance of “whole-body” PET scanners has not been studied well. In this study, we evaluated the performance characteristics of our 4-layer DOI whole-body PET prototype scanner with particular focus on the impact of incorporating DOI information on the imaging performance. [Methods] Our whole-body DOI-PET prototype scanner had 4 detector rings, each of which consisted of 40 detectors (160 detectors in total). Each detector was composed of 1,024 GSOZ crystals, which were arranged in 4 layers of 16 × 16 arrays. The axial FOV was 215 mm and the ring diameter was 660 mm. We measured performance characteristics of the scanner according to the NEMA NU2 standard. In addition, we examined the impact of DOI information on the imaging performance using the NEMA NU4 image quality phantom. Three types of images were reconstructed with 4-layer DOI information, with virtual 2-layer DOI information, and without DOI information. [Results] The radial spatial resolution (FBP) was 4.1, 4.8 and 5.9 mm at 1, 10 and 20 cm offset position. The 4-layer DOI information improved the radial spatial resolution by 48% at the 20 cm offset position. The scatter fraction was 44% and the peak NECR was 22.9 kcps at 7.4 kBq/mL. The sensitivity was 5.9 kcps/MBq. For the NEMA NU4 image quality test at the 20 cm offset position, the image with 4-layer DOI information could visualize the smallest 1-mm-diameter hot cylinder. [Conclusion] We showed that the 4-layer DOI technology provided high and uniform spatial resolution over the FOV and improved the contrast for small uptake regions located at the peripheral FOV, which could improve detectability of small and distal lesions such as nodal metastases, especially in obese patients. |
