内容記述 Beryllium intermetallic compounds (beryllides) are the promising materials as advanced neutron multipliers in demonstration fusion power reactors because of the high stability with water vapor at high temperature. Advanced neutron multipliers are being developed by Japan and the EU as part of their Broader Approach activities. It has been well-known that beryllides are too brittle to be synthesized to block. By repeated trial and errors, a novel process, homogenization of mixed powders and plasma sintering for synthesis of single phase beryllides has been established.
In the previous study, the effect of grain size on the reactivity in beryllium has been investigated using plasma sintered beryllium, demonstrating that the grain size attributed to hardness as well as reactivity at high temperature. This size effect in beryllium may be identified in beryllides with respects to thermal stability and reactivity.
In this study, to fabricate beryllides with different grain size, pulverization treatment of homogenized powders was carried out and the powders were plasma-sintered under same conditions.
For evaluation of the thermal stability of beryllides with different grain size, in the present study, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and long-duration annealing test were investigated in light of grain size effect.
