内容記述 | The magnitude of ionizing radiation on stochastic effects is influenced by quality of radiation. Generally, high LET radiation such as neutrons and charged particles are more effective than low LET radiation. The effectiveness of high LET radiation compared to low LET radiation is described by RBE, and it is dependent on the dose, dose rate, fractionation, energy and LET. RBE is also influenced by biological factors such as gender, tissue/organ and genetic background. Little data are available so far on the age dependence of RBE. Therefore, we started the animal experiments to examine the effect of age at exposure on RBE values for lifespan shortening and cancer induction using variety of mouse and rat strains. B6C3F1 mice and 2 strains of rats at various age after birth were whole body irradiated with either 137Cs gamma rays or fast neutrons with average energy of 2MeV to determine the lifespan shortening (LSS) and the cancer risk. We showed that the effect of gamma rays as well as neutron on LSS was most evident when mice were irradiated at 1-3 weeks after birth. Female mice were more susceptible to radiation induction of LSS by 2 folds. RBE for neutrons as determined by the initial slope of dose response was 6 and 9 for male and female, respectively. Importantly, RBE values were little influenced by age at exposure. When dose rate effectiveness factor of 2 and 4 for LSS is adopted, maximum RBE ranges from 12-18 and 24-36, respectively. RBE values of neutrons in mammary and pulmonary carcinogenesis using 2 rat strains were not largely changed by age at exposure as well. Further research is needed to convince if the use of single radiation weighting factor of neutron on different age population is permissive for radiation protection as a whole. |
