内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Radiotherapy with carbon-ion beams from Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) has a history of 19 years. Original in-house treatment planning system HIPLAN was developed by Endo et al. based on the system of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and has been used since then to treat over 7000 patients. It features full functionality to plan carbon-ion radiotherapy, such as three-dimensional CT image processing, target and organ contouring, CT number to stopping-power ratio conversion, automated beam selection, conformal collimator and range-compensator design, RBE weighting and penumbra effects to dose distribution, dose viewing and analysis, online data transfer to the HIMAC beam-delivery system. Functionality to plan layer-stacking beams was added by Kanematsu et al. and has been used for more conformal carbon-ion radiotherapy. Small number of eye-melanoma cases were treated with vertical 140 MeV/u beams using another original CT-based planning system developed by Kanai et al, which was replaced by a localized version of ELEKTA product XiO to additionally support horizontal 170 MeV/u beams configured by Koyama et al. Recently, Mitsubishi Electric has commercialized treatment planning system XiO-N for general proton and carbon-ion broad-beam therapy, which was built with experiences and technologies of NIRS on the ELEKTA XiO platform. The XiO-N system started its clinical use at NIRS in the spring of 2012 and is gradually replacing the HIPLAN system, which requires some translation and modification of system-specific planning procedures. The transition is scheduled to complete in the summer of 2014 in accordance with the upgrade of the HIMAC broad-beam delivery system.
