内容記述 | Evaluating future reward is important not only for choosing among options but also for regulating motivation. Studies of choice behavior show that the subjective value of a reward is inversely proportional to the delayed reward. This raises the question of how the subjective value is modulated by delaying reward when the action is driven by motivation to succeed. We examined the neural activity in the caudate nucleus, one of the brain structures related to reward expectation, by using a reward-size-and-delay task (Minamimoto et al., 2009). The monkey earns a reward if it correctly releases a bar after a red dot changes to green. A visual cue presented at the beginning of each trial indicates how long the reward will be delayed (0.3, 3.6 or 7.2 s) and how large the reward will be (1 drop or 3drops of water) after the correct bar release. Rates of incorrect responses (either early or later release) are well-fit by an inverse function of outcome value, that is reward size hyperbolically discounted by delay duration. We recorded 89 phasically active neurons in the two monkeys' caudate nuclei. 56/89 showed significant responses to at least one task event (cue, go, release or reward). We tested for the effects of predicted reward size and delayed duration on neural activity using multiple linear regression. Six of 49 cue responsive neurons showed significant modulation of both reward size and delay (p < 0.05). This effect was observed in go (3/32 neurons), release (3/35 neurons) and reward period (5/31 neurons). These results suggest that neurons in the caudate nucleus combine predicted and experienced temporal discounting and intrinsic reward value to estimate the overall subjective value of outcome. | |||||
