内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In the national and international guidelines for drinking water quality, it is recommended that selenium (Se) concentrations in drinking water do not exceed 0.01 mg L-1 (10 ng mL-1). In order to describe nationwide Se concentration levels in Japan and its correlation with other elements, we measured 62 element concentrations in river water for 45 major rivers. Ten samples per river were collected from the upper stream to the river mouth. Each sample was filtered with a 0.45 um pore size membrane filter and then element concentrations were measured by octapole reaction system inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Yokogawa, Agilent 7500c). Seven samples collected near some river mouths were high in salinity, so no element concentrations were measured.
The Se concentrations were determined in 430 samples, and the range was 0.013 - 1.17 µg/L. No Se were measured anywhere in the Ohta River due to its low concentration. The cumulative probability distribution of Se data was close to a log-normal line so that the geometric mean (GM) concentrations were calculated for each river. The GM value of Se in the Abe River was the highest among the rivers (0.94 ug/L). Then we compared the Se concentrations with those of other elements for each river. No clear tendency was observed; for example, 4 rivers showed high correlations (R>0.90, p<0.001 by Student's t-test) with more than 10 elements, but 14 rivers did not show any correlations. In some rivers, high correlations between Se and S and/or Re were observed. The observed correlations would mainly be affected by weathering of bedrock.
