内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Consumption of contaminated drinking water and foods with chemicals is of great concern from the viewpoint of public health. These two elements are of great interest because As poisoning has become one of the major issues in developing countries mainly due to its high concentration in bedrocks, and Se become toxic to animals at high concentrations, though it is also an essential nutrient for animals. In the national and international guidelines for drinking water quality, it is recommended that arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) concentrations in drinking water do not exceed 0.01 mg/L (10 micro-g/L). It was reported that world average of As and Se concentrations in river waters are estimated at 0.62 micro-g/L and 0.07 micro-g/L, respectively (Gaillardet et al. 2003). Due to low concentrations, it is difficult to describe nationwide As and Se concentration levels in Japan with a conventional method using flameless or hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry.
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) becomes widely used to measure low levels of these elements, and, moreover, recently developed octapole reaction system (ORS) for ICP-MS could achieve low detection limits for As and Se compared to other methods. Thus, using ORS-ICP-MS, we directly measured trace levels of As and Se in river water samples for 45 major rivers and 10 samplings per river. At the sampling site, a water sample was filtrated (<0.45 micro-m), and then acidified with ultrapure nitric acid (1 mL / 100 mL sample). To determine As and Se by ORS-ICP-MS, He gas and H2 gas, respectively, were introduced into the ORS as reaction gas; typical detection limits for As and Se were 0.02-0.03 micro-g/L and 0.01-0.04 micro-g/L, respectively. Our results for As and Se in standard reference river water samples from NIST and AIST agreed well with certified values.
The concentrations of As and Se were determined in more than 95% of the samples. The cumulative probability distributions of these elements were almost on log-normal lines. Background data for As and Se were collected and the geometric means were 0.57 micro-g/L and 0.057 micro-g/L, respectively.
