| 内容記述 | Epidemiologic research on potential radiation risks in nuclear power plant (NPP) areas in Japan has been challenged so that the public can become more aware of and comfortable with the responsible NPP use. The health effects to the public from radioactive effluents from the NPP are too small in normal operation to be of concern for daily life. A mortality database from 1972 to 1997 was prepared mainly for cancers in 3,255 administrative units through Japan. There have been two approaches taken; 1) to demonstrate a constant excess relative risk (ERR) in NPP areas after a minimum latency following the start of commercial operation, 2) examine geographical temporal patterns of cancer mortality in Japanese municipalities using standardized mortality ratio (SMR). No evidence was found to support an increase of childhood cancers near the Japanese NPP areas while confounding of the ERR estimate was noted for cancers in the elderly. Interpretation of the findings from our exercises is to overcome difficulties due to the usage of administrative units and intrinsically undetectable ERR. It requires a consistency explainable for the long time data for multi-NPP facilities rather than for a local site or for a specific period. |
