内容記述 | With developments in the high-tech industry, use of rare earth elements (REEs) is increasing. These elements may be released into the environment through application of wastewater treatment sludge. Some REEs will promote growth of plants but only a small amount is necessary. At sufficiently high concentrations, they could be toxic to plants, animals and humans through food chain concentration. For health safety of the public, control of REEs discharged to the environment is required. To eliminate excess amounts of REEs from the environment, we studied removal of REEs from a medium rich in organic matters by algal flagellate Euglena gracilis. E. gracilis was statically cultured in TYG medium (pH 3.5) under a 12 h light-dark cycle or in the dark at 25?C. The medium contained tryptone, yeast extract, glucose, and vitamin B12. At the beginning of the incubation, REEs were spiked to the culture at 10 ppb each. E. gracilis cells were enumerated under a microscope. At 0, 7, 14 and 21 d, the culture was filtered and conc. HNO3 was added prior to REEs measurement by ICP-MS. Population changes in E. gracilis cells had little influence from light conditions. The cells grew exponentially during the first 7 days of incubation, and then the culture reached a stationary phase. In the culture under light-dark conditions, REEs were removed during the stationary phase of cell growth. At 21 d, the concentrations of REEs except for Sc were less than 0.7 ppb in the filtrate of the culture. In contrast, little removal of REEs was found in the E. gracilis culture under the dark condition; the REEs ranged from 8.9 to 9.6 ppb at 21 d. From these results, we suggested that E. gracilis cells were potentially available to remove REEs, and the removal rate could be controlled by light conditions during incubation. |
