内容記述 We have measured cell survival levels in various human and rodent cell lines exposed to high LET (LET = 80 keV/um) carbon ion particles (290 MeV/u), and compared them with the survivals of the same cell lines exposed to X-rays. Non homologous end joining (NHEJ) deficient human fibroblasts (180 BR) irradiated with high LET carbon ions showed a survival level identical to that obtained with x-rays (RBE 1.0), while normal human fibroblasts showed a significantly higher cell survival obtained with x-rays than that with high LET carbon ions (RBE > 2.0 at 10% cell survival). NHEJ deficient hamster xrs6 cells (Ku 80 mutant) showed a 180BR-like survival response (RBE 1.5) and wild-type Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells showed a normal human cell-like response (RBE 2.2). When xrs6 cells corrected with the normal hamster Ku80 gene (Xrs6-haKu80) were used, the response was similar to that of wild-type CHO cells. These results suggest that the proteins associated with NHEJ may not play a major role in the recovery process of cells exposed to high LET radiation. We also studied interphase (G1) chromosome damage and repair in these cells with the premature chromosome condensation (PCC) technique. Those results are included as well.
