\n【Purpose】
A new PET detector module which consists of a 3-mm-pitch 16×16 LFS scintillator array and a 16×16 (256-ch) multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) array has been developed for TOF-PET systems. The module has four ASIC boards which enable processing a large number of signals. In this study, we evaluated intrinsic performance of the module and compared count rate characteristics with another PET detector module equipped with two ASIC boards and 12×12 (144-ch) 4-mm-pitch MPPC array.
\n【Methods】
A pair of the 256-ch PET detector modules were oppositely placed and were irradiated from 22Na point source located on center between modules. We measured energy resolution after linearity saturation correction and measured coincidence resolving time (CRT). The energy window of each channel was set to ±2sigma. In addition, we investigated count rate characteristics of two types of the modules which are 256-ch and 144-ch detector modules by changing distance between modules. The crystal length is 10-mm for both modules. A 22Na point source and a micro sphere (125 µL) filled with 18F-solution were used to evaluate count rate dependency of the CRT performance.
\n【Results】
The mean energy resolution at 511 keV was 11.8±0.8% for one module and 12.2±0.7% for another module. The CRT of all channels was 235.1 ps. The 256-ch detector module detected more radiations by about 10% compared with the 144-ch detector module and worked normally in case of high count rate condition of 1,000 kcps per module (allowable performance limit) without a considerable loss of the CRT performance.
\n【Conclusion】
We confirmed high intrinsic performance of the new 256-ch TOF-PET detector module. Furthermore, the module showed high stability against high count rate condition. These characteristics are suitable for compact brain PET systems in consideration of a small distance between a subject and a detector.
