内容記述 | Purpose: In a PET system, 3-dimensional (3D) information of radiation detected position in a PET detector is important to avoid parallax error and achieve both high spatial resolution and high sensitivity simultaneously. The 2D position information is easy to get by using a position-sensitive PMT, for instance. Regarding depth position, various methods have been proposed, however, it was still difficult to get it with the spatial resolution as high as other 2D position information. We have developed a PET detector called X’tal cube in which SiPM photodetectors are used. The SiPM which becomes popular recently is small and thin so that, unlike PMT, it will not interfere with radiations if it is coupled to a scintillator block on the side where the radiations enter. The X’tal cube has the structure that SiPMs are coupled on all six surface of a scintillation crystal block which is segmented 3-dimensionally into cubes. By the X’tal cube, we tried to achieve high spatial resolution in all 3 directions. \nMethods: For the SiPM and scintillator, we used the multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) of S10931-50P (Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., Japan) and LYSO, respectively. An 18 mm × 18 mm × 18 mm monolithic LYSO was segmented into an 18 × 18 × 18 array of 1 mm × 1 mm × 1 mm cubes by the laser processing technique developed by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., Japan. A 4 × 4 array of MPPCs was coupled on each surface of the LYSO. To evaluate performance of the X’tal cube, 511 keV gamma-rays from 22Na point sources were irradiated onto the X’tal cube uniformly. By a simple Anger-type calculation of the 96 MPPC signals, we obtained the 3D position histogram in which a response corresponding to each segment was formed. Response discrimination indicates ability of the X’tal cube to have 1 mm spatial resolutions in all 3 directions. \nResults: Responses were discriminated enough to be identified for all 5832 segments. \nConclusions: We introduced a novel PET detector, X’tal cube, and demonstrated its ability to have high spatial resolution of 1 mm in all 3 directions. We also introduced the laser processing technique through the X’tal cube, which is greatly advantageous in crystal block fabrication. |
