内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) was completed in 1993 as the world's first facility using a heavy-ion accelerator dedicated to medical applications and its clinical trials were started in 1994 with three treatment rooms, two ones of which have a horizontal and vertical beam port each, and one of which has both horizontal and vertical beam ports. The technique of passive beam shaping was applied to these beam ports. In 1999 one simulation room was additionally constructed on the same floor as the treatment rooms. According to the expansion of the carbon therapy to other tumors, we expanded the selectable beam energies; 430 MeV/n for horizontal beam lines and 350 MeV/n for vertical beam lines, though it provided originally 170, 290 and 400 MeV/n for the horizontal beam ports, and 140, 290 and 350 MeV/n for the vertical beam ports. In 2012 the new two treatment rooms were constructed, which has both horizontal and vertical beam ports with the scanning irradiation system. The number of patients per year has been increasing, resulting in 800 patients in 2012 fiscal year and the total number of treated patients was over 7000.
The activities of medical physics related to carbon therapy at HIMAC are research and development activity and clinical activity such as QA/QC for each patient and the existing system.
As R&D activities, we have developed the techniques for dose concentration to the target in the patient's body; respiratory gating irradiation with passive beam, layer-stack irradiation, scanning irradiation to respiratory moving target, and so on.
In addition to these R&D, we has performed the QA/QC activities for MU of each patient, irradiation system, and positioning system and so on. Because the increasing number of patients reduced the machine time for QA/QC activities, we have developed the efficient and reliable dose detectors such as MLIC(Multi Layer Ion Chamber) and optimized the way of the flow of QA/QC activities.
This presentation introduces the irradiation systems of HIMAC and the irradiation method, including performance and related topics and QA/QC activities related to carbon therapy.
