内容記述 The precise and accurate determination of uranium isotope ratios is of importance for the nuclear industry, as well as in environmental and earth sciences. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is increasingly becoming the instrument of choice for the analysis of various environmental samples over thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), which has been used as the dominant analytical technique for precise isotope ratio measurement over decades. 234U belongs to the 238U natural radioactive decay series, and at equilibrium, the abundance ratio, 234U/238U, corresponds to the ratio of their half lives, i.e. 54.8 x10-6. In natural waters, deviations from this ratio reflect radiological and geochemical processes and can be correlated with the migration behaviour. Precise determination of uranium isotope ratio, 235U/238U, is essential in nuclear safe guards. The natural mass ratio of 235U/238U is 0.7%, and taking into account of differences in the half-lives of these isotopes, the natural activity ratio is 4.5%. Any enrichment process which separates lighter isotopes also increases amount of 234U. Prior to the measurement of isotope ratios, uranium has been chemically separated using an anion exchange resin column coupled with extraction chromatography column (Eichrom Industries UTEVA resin). This presentation compares the measurement of 234U/238U and 235U/238U ratios between a high resolution ICP-MS (Finnigan ELEMENT) with a micro-flow nebulization system and a multi-collector TIMS (VG Sector 54-30). The 235U/238U isotope ratio was measured with a precision of 0.02% at the 95% uncertainty level using MC-TIMS whereas it was about 0.2% with HR-ICP-MS. There is some improvement necessary for the measurement of 234U/238U ratio using HR-ICP-MS while applying to water samples. The method has been applied successfully to a wide range of water and soil samples. U isotope data obtained for standard reference materials and geological samples are in excellent agreement further highlighting the reliability and capabilities of our technique.
