内容記述 Precise measurement of chemical composition of ultra heavy nuclei (Z>30) in galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) would make a breakthrough to resolve the remaining problems in cosmic ray astrophysics. Although the elemental composition of such GCRs has been observed by previous experiments, but its abundance has not been sufficiently resolved. Moreover, thoes isotopes have not been observed yet. It is because of the extremely low flux in GCRs and the difficulty of mass identification of such massive particles. High performance cosmic ray detectors with an excellent mass resolution and a high collecting power are required to observe precisely such massive isotopic compositions in GCRs. For this purpose, a novel detector to detect selectively ultra heavy nuclei was developed. The response and detection threshold for heavy ions with various Z/b were investigated by developing new copolymers mixing CR-39 (BARYOTRAK) with various concentrated DAP (diallyl phthalate). CR-39 (BARYOTRAK) has many advantages: 1) high uniformity of detector response, 2) the very nice surface quality after the etching, and 3) the excellent charge and mass resolutions for heavy ions. It is found o control the Z/b detection threshold of copolymers by changing DAP concentration. This novel detector with the excellent particle identification power and variable Z/b detection threshold is adequate to detect ultra heavy nuclei.
