内容記述 | The first clinical trial of cancer treatment with carbon beams generated from the HIMAC was conducted in June 1994. The total number of patients treated as of February 2007 was in excess of 3,178. Based on more than ten years of experience with HIMAC, we have proposed a new treatment facility for the purpose of further development of the therapy with HIMAC. This facility, which will be connected with the HIMAC synchrotron, will consist of three treatment rooms: two rooms equipped with horizontal and vertical beam-delivery systems and one room with a rotating gantry. In both the fixed beam-delivery and rotating gantry systems, a 3D beam-scanning method will be employed with gated irradiation with patient respiration in order to increase the treatment accuracy. The energy of the fixed beam-delivery system ranges from 140 to 430 MeV/n. At the present design of the gantry system, the following main specifications are maximum energy of 400 MeV/n, lateral field of 150 mm in square, SOBP size ranging from 40 to 150 mm, and residual range of 250 mm at maximum. Since the beam control for the size, the position and the time structure plays an essential role in the 3D beam scanning with the irradiation gated with patient respiration, the R&D study has been carried out with the HIMAC synchrotron since 2006. We will report the design and R&D studies for the new treatment facility at HIMAC. | |||||
