内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Adaptive responses to low dose or low dose-rate irradiation were examined for various endpoints at whole body level in mice. (1) Groups of 5-week-old female ICR mice, 35 in each group, were irradiated with 137Cs gamma rays at 0.35, 1.2, or 3.5 mGy/hr for 35 days. The mice were then injected with 0.5 mg of methylcholanthrene (MC) in the groin and the irradiation was continued. Cumulative tumor incidences up to 216 days after the MC injection in the 0.35, 1.2, and 3.5 mGy/hr groups were 94%, 76%, and 89%, respectively. That in non-irradiated control was 94%. (2) Thymic lymphomas were induced by four weekly X-irradiations of 1.8 Gy each (total dose: 7.2 Gy) in a group of 30 female C57BL/6N mice, 10 weeks old at the beginning of the repeated irradiation. The cumulative incidence of thymic lymphoma was 90 %. When a group of 20 female mice, was exposed to 137Cs gamma rays at a dose rate of 1.2 mGy/hr throughout life, starting 35 days before the first 1.8-Gy X-irradiation, the incidence of thymic lymphoma was suppressed to 43 %. (3) In Type II diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice, the urine glucose level was improved in some of the mice irradiated at 0.70 mGy/hr, but not in the non-irradiated control mice. Mortality was delayed and a healthy appearance was prolonged in the irradiated mice by about 20-30 weeks compared with the non-irradiated control mice. (4) Irradiation of C57BL/6 embryos with 0.3 Gy of X-rays on embryonic day 11 reduced the incidence of digital defects induced by 3 Gy irradiation on embryonic day 12.
These results indicate that the radiation adaptive responses are effective in vivo for tumorigenesis, certain disease development and malformation in mice.
