内容記述 In the Tokai-mura criticality accident (30 September 1999) at JCO Company in Tokai-mura (Japan), three workers, involved in the uranium processing, were heavily exposed. They were transported to our institute (NIRS), for radiological examinations and intensive medical care. We have determined radionuclides produced in their bodies (including blood, urine, etc.). Activation products such as 24Na, 42K and 82Br were identified in these materials. The radionuclide of the highest activity observed in biological materials was 24Na, e.g. the concentrations of this nuclide in the blood samples from the three patients at the accident time were 169, 92 and 23 Bq ml-1, respectively. Concentrations of the stable Na in the same samples were determined to obtain specific activities. Using the specific activity data we have estimated the individual's neutron fluences.
We have also carried out analysis of radionuclides in environmental samples (vegetation, soil, etc.) from the JCO campus. Fission products such as 131I, 133I, 140Ba-140La and 137Cs were determined in plant samples collected near the uranium conversion facility. However, levels of these nuclides outside the campus were very low. Since enriched uranium was used in this facility, we also have determined uranium concentrations and 235U/238U ratios in soil and plant samples by ICP-MS.
