内容記述 | Particle therapy is an emerging and promising mode for cancer radiotherapy due to their superb biological effectiveness and dose controllability compared to photon beams. Application of proton and carbon ions based radiotherapy has been in practice for clinical application for many of cancer types including lung carcinoma. However, limited knowledge exits in literature about side effects and radiation risk associated with charged particle therapy. Radiation induced bystander effect, which shows manifestation of radiation effects in cells not directly hit by radiation, is one of the frontier research areas in radiation biology. Studies have shown that irradiation of tumor cells result in release/generation of interleukins (IL-6, IL-8), transforming growth factor-beta1, tumor necrosis factor alpha, reactive oxygen/nitrogen species etc, which may result in bystander response to neighboring cells. Bystander effect from irradiated tumor cells to non-irradiated neighboring (bystander) normal cells at tissue/organ level may contribute significantly in acute and long term adverse health effects of radiation, and, hence, might have significant relevance in clinical outcome of cancer radiotherapy. Hence, this research project was aimed to investigate bystander effect of proton beam irradiated lung cancer cells with normal cells using suitable biological endpoints. |
