内容記述 | Selective ablation of jeopardized muscle in the heart is an effective for various intractable heart diseases such as cardiomyopathy and angina pectoris. Heavy ion beams derived from synchrotron accelerators have been established as a less invasive form of cancer radiotherapy because they enable the radiation dose to be spatially concentrated including a depth-dose distribution. We evaluated the use of heavy ion beams to selectively ablate the muscle tissue in the hope of developing a less invasive therapy toward the heart diseases. The legs of two rabbits were selectively irradiated using a heavy ion beam (290MeV/u carbon-12). The calculated radiation dose was 100 Gy and 50 Gy, and was focused to the superficial region by applying the spread-out Bragg peak principle. Four weeks later, histological necrosis was observed to be confined at the leg associated with the irradiated region. This method may be applicable to the treatment of intractable heart. | |||||
