内容記述 | The National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) started charged particle radiotherapy (RT)in 1994 using carbon ion beams generated by the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC)(Fig.1).Since then, clinical studies on carbon ion RT have been conducted, and it was approved as a[highly advanced medical technology] in 2003. To date, more than 3,400 patients have been treated and clinical efficacy of carbon ion RT has been confirmed in many tumors. The HIMAC has been operated as a multipurpose facility open to the international and domestic researchers for biological, physical and accelerator engineering studies as well as for cancer treatment. The number of research studies conducted with the HIMAC in the last 10 years is 120 or more per year, and the number of users is 500 to 600, with related research performance increasing greatly in quality and quantity. Carbon ion beams are unique among charged particle beams in that they not only have superior physical dose distribution properties similar to proton beams but, based on the fact that ion beams travel deeper inside the body, they also have a larger RBE.Carbon ion beams also have a more favorable biological dose distribution behavior than other ion beams. It is therefore expected to be effective against intractable, photon-resistant cancers, and to greatly reduce the treatment time compared with photon or proton RT. Thus, the carbon ion beam has a therapeutic advantage for permitting short course RT.1),2) This paper presents an overview of carbon ion RT at NIRS. |
