内容記述 | In last decades over 250 anomalous radiation zones of uranium or thorium origin have been identified in the Balkan countries of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro. During the conflict in the mid - 90's, some hundreds of tons of ammunition containing transuranic waste were deposited in this area (Bosnia and Hercegovina 1995, Serbia and Montenegro 1999). For these reasons, field investigations of environmental adiation over this region are of considerable interest. The aim of this work was to obtain reference values of radon and thoron concentration and of penetrating environmental radiation from field measurements conducted in 2003 over three rural communities: Han Pijesak (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Uzice (West Serbia) and Niska). Average indoor radon and thoron concentrations were measured both with passive radon/thoron UFO type detectors with electrochemically etched (ECE) polycarbonate foils (NIRS system, now at Vinca) and using Radosys detectors with chemically etched CR-39 films. Measurements of outdoor radon and external penetrating radiation absorbed dose rates in air were also conducted in situ, using Radosys detectors and TLDs (LiF:Mg,Cu,P). The measured indoor radon concentration (Bq/m3) ranged from 7.9 (Han Pijesak) to 4730 (Niska Banja). Concentration of indoor thoron (Bq/m3) ranged from 2.2 (Han Pijesak) to 269.4 (Niska Banja). Outdoor radon concentration (Bq/m3) ranged from 2.1 (Han Pijesak) to 168 (Niska Banja). Indoor and outdoor kerma air rates (nGy/h) varied in the range 62-139 and 55-146, respectively. The obtained values can be applied as reference levels for field measurements around other sites where DU ammunition had been deployed. The ECE laboratory at Vinca is now fully operational and can serve as a regional coordinating centre for radon/thoron surveys. |
