内容記述 There are several strategies for estimating the similarity between tissues using gene expression data. However, similarity scores based on global expression data tend to yield unintuitive results. It is better to prepare multiple similarity scores based on different viewpoints. Here we present a new similarity score based on the degree of sharing genes expressed more in some tissues than in others. The selective expression information was calculated by applying a computational approach (called MAICE) to publicly available oligonucleotide microarray data. Currently, MAICE is the only method which can identify tissues with high expression without any pre-defined threshold. The score is calculated by counting genes with high expression in at least two tissues. We found that for all tissues except the testis there are other similar tissues, and that similar tissues contain more common cellular components than dissimilar ones. This is consistent with the staggering number of cell-specific transcripts in the testis.
