The JT-60SA Poloidal Field (PF) coils comprise four central solenoid modules (CS) and six Equilibrium Field (EF1-6) coils. Their quench detection (QD) system uses pickup coils integrated in the coils to cancel inductive voltages during current transients and to detect any resistive voltage from a quench. A low pass filter, which consists of a resistor and a capacitor, is reducing the noise before the signal is fed to the differential amplifier of the QD. During the individual energization test of the PF coils in August 2023, spike-shaped noise was observed by the QD voltage when current transients were applied to PF coil. This spike must be reduced to avoid false detection of quench.Following a circuit analysis of EF2 coil it was found that the spike noise was caused by a small difference of the time constant of the RC filter circuit and of the pickup coil. The reduction of spike noise was experimentally confirmed by adjusting the time constants by a variable capacitor or resistor in the RC filter. Now the PF quench detectors are being modified to allow adjustment of the RC filter ready for the next tokamak operation. |
