内容記述 An unstable isotope 176Lu decays to 176Hf with a half-life of approxi-
mately 4x10^10 y. The 176Lu-176Hf system has a potential as a nuclear
chronometer for dating astrophysical and geological events.
However, the half-lives measured with various nuclear experiments are inconsistent. Furthermore, the half-lives evaluated from Lu-Hf
isochron in meteorites and terrestrial rocks whose age was determined
by the U-Pb system show two different values. Here we
report a half-life measured using a new method that is not sensitive
to various parameters such as nuclear structure or detection effciency.
We measure 176Lu decay using a windowless 4pi solid angle detec-
tor based upon bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation crystals with
a total detection effciency of approximately 99.9%, where a natural
Lu sample is located inside of the detector. The measured half-life of
(3.719+-12)x10^10 y is consistent with that obtained from the analysis of
terrestrial materials within the uncertainty. This suggests that an unre-
solved mechanism is required to explain the shorter half-life obtained
from some meteorites. We discuss a possibility that the decay acceler-
ation of 176Lu by neutron inelastic scattering caused by cosmic-rays.
