First, we obtained and compared 10 cell lines of malignant melanoma and 11 cell lines of squamous cell carcinoma originated from human patients. Survival parameters were deduced from each cell lines that received a single dose of 50 keV/um carbon ions. When we plot X-ray values and carbon-ion values on X- and y- axis, respectively, alpha/beta ratio was only the parameter that distinguish malignant melanoma from squamous cell carcinoma. We have selected several cell lines to analyze and compare protein expression between the two types of malignancy. Second, DNA synthesis of irradiated tumors were measured by counting radiolabeled thymidine after an IV injection to HSG tumor?bearing nude mice. When tumor blood flows were shut by clamping before irradiation, incorporation thymidine into tumors was lower for the clamped tumors than non-clamped tumors 24 hr but not 12 hr after clamping/irradiation. Third, relation between tumor growth rate and RBE of carbon ions were investigated.
