Three kinds of\naccelerated HI from mono beams of carbon, silicon and iron with the LET\nvalues of about 15, 55, and 200 keV/micrometer respectively were examined. A\npriming low dose of X-rays at 0.50 Gy in combination with a challenging dose\nof 7.50 Gy was used in the animals serving as a positive control group to\nverify the successful induction of adaptive response. The priming low dose\nof X-rays at 0.50 Gy was further used in combination with accelerated HI.\nThe priming low dose of X-rays significantly reduced the mortality from the\nhigh challenging dose of carbon or silicon particles, but not from iron\nparticles. Results indicate that AR could be induced by priming low LET\nX-rays in combination with subsequent challenging high LET irradiations from\ncertain kinds of accelerated heavy ions, and successful induction of AR\nwould be possible an event relating to the LET value or/and the HI particle\nof the challenging irradiations. This is the first time to demonstrate the\nexistence of AR induced by low LET X-rays against high LET irradiations at\nthe whole body level in a mouse model.
