Resveratrol (1H) has attracted considerable interest with regard to prevention of diseases induced by oxidative stress. However, the radical-scavenging mechanism of 1H has yet to be clarified. On the other hand, 1H has been reported to show genotoxicity in vitro as well as DNA-cleaveing activity in the presence of CuII. We
report herein that the scavenging of galvinoxyl radical by 1H is significantly accelerated by the presence of magnesium ion in deaerated acetonitrile. Such an acceleration indicates that the radical-scavenging reaction involves an electron transfer from 1H to galvinoxyl radical, since the electron transfer is known to be accelerated by metal ions. Detailed kinetic data obtained in this study provides valuable information about the development of novel antioxidants with enhanced antioxidative ability and reduced toxicity.
