Direct labeling of glutamic acid enables in vivo observation of amino acid displacement. However, the high permeability of GLT to amino acids makes imaging challenging. This is because direct PET nuclide-labeled amino acids do not bind to transporters. Additionally, excessive modification impedes blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability.
