As an\nancient example, Egyptian mummies have been found to have\nscars from smallpox infection.1 There have been various viral\npandemics; however, the first virus to be discovered was tobacco\nmosaic virus (TMV) in 1892.2 Russian microbiologist D. I.\nIvanovsky found an infectious agent in the extraction liquid of\ntobacco plants passed through a Chamberland filter, which\nfiltered out bacteria. The technology of the day could not detect\nthis mysterious factor, and observation had to await the\ndevelopment of scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
