In our previous studies with SPICE, targeted radiation of cancer cells induces DNA double-strand breaks in non-irradiated normal cells surrounding it. On the other hand, DNA double strand break repair of irradiated cancer cells were enhanced by the non-irradiated normal cells [3, 4]. These results suggest that the radio-sensitivity of irradiated cancer cells and non-irradiated normal cells is modified by bystander responses.\nCOX-2 (cycrooxygenase-2) is well known as a bystander mediator [5]. In addition, COX-2 also plays a role in enhancing the radio-resistance of cancer cells [6].
