During irradiation by swift highly charged ions, many molecules are ionized along this ion path, and strong electric field is formed by the charges of the molecular ions. We have found that this electric field is approximately proportional to incident ion impact ionization cross sections. Therefore, this electric field provides a longer-range force than that from a point charge. This means that slow secondary electrons are easily to be trapped by this longer-range force. Further, we have found the function of the number of secondary electrons escaping this electric field as a function of the cross sections. The secondary electrons trapped by this electric field collide with molecules again and again during their long stay in this region. This increases energy deposition and produces a high dosage., 19th International Conference: Physics of Highly Charged Ion}, title = {Role of ion impact ionization cross sections in radiation biology using swift highly charged ion beams}, year = {2018} }
