Since the resonance energy of nuclei is unique, NRF could be used as a fingerprint of each isotope for assay. In the proposed method, a photon beam generated by laser Compton scattering (LCS) between laser light and high energy electrons is used to excite a nucleus via NRF. The LCS photon beam has several advanced characteristics in its energy tunability, narrow energy width, and small divergence. Since high energy gamma-rays in a MeV energy range used in the proposed method can penetrate thick materials, this method could be applied to nondestructive detection of nuclear materials hidden in thick heavy shielding materials such as a cargo container. So far, we have implemented a research and development program of the LCS gamma-ray NDA which includes the demonstration of intense LCS photon generation from energy recovery linac (ERL), establishment of NRF measurement methods, benchmark test of Monte Carlo simulation code.
