Therefore, advanced neutron multipliers with high stability at high temperatures are desirable for a fusion reactor in which coolant water is extensively used. Beryllium intermetallic compounds (beryllides) are one of promising materials. Methods of fabricating beryllides pebbles have been developed by combining a plasma sintering synthesis method and a rotating electrode granulation method.\nIn the case of Be12Ti, an annealing treatment is necessary to homogenize pebbles to a single phase of Be12Ti after granulation, because the compositional structure changes via a peritectic reaction cased by remelting under granulation process. Homogenized Be12Ti pebbles showed larger reactivity than that with no annealing treatment, because the homogenization caused an increase in the specific surface area of the treated pebbles. To prevent increased surface area and reactivity, prototypic pebbles with Be12V composition that have no peritectic reaction during cooling process were successfully fabricated without homogenization. Then, the Be12V prototypic pebbles indicated to have a good oxidation resistance.\nFrom the reactivity result, it was clarified that BeO layer on the surface of Be12V pebbles acts as a protective barrier against hydrogen generation reaction. As the next stage, the effect of BeO layer as surface modification of beryllide was evaluated. Surface-modified Be12V pebbles annealed in oxygen atmosphere were prepared as specimen. Using surface-modified pebbles, three times of experiments of hydrogen generation reaction were carried out at 1273 K for 24 h. Hydrogen generation rate reduced to almost the same level as the background by the surface modification.
