The main development issue is making the PET ring diameter as small as possible while avoiding interference with the RF-coil, in order to realize a highly sensitive PET system with high spatial resolution by making full use of DOI measurement capabilities. In this paper, we finally developed a full-ring prototype of the proposed PET-MRI system, and we carried out simultaneous measurements with a 3.0 T MRI. The prototype system consists of eight four-layer DOI PET detectors and the birdcage RF-coil developed for the proposed system. The PET detectors consist of six monolithic multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) arrays (S11064-050P) arranged in a row, a readout circuit, two four-layer DOI scintillator arrays and a shielding box. LYSO crystals are arranged in 19 × 6 × 4 array to form a crystal block, and each crystal block is coupled to three MPPC arrays. Each crystal element is 2.0 × 2.0 × 5.0 mm3. The diameter of the RF-coil elements is 27.5cm. There are eight coil elements in the RF-coil and the PET detectors are mounted on all gaps between the RF-coil elements. We evaluated performance of the prototype system. The PET detectors, the RF-coil and the cables were in an MRI room. A data acquisition system and power supply for the MPPCs and preamplifiers were outside the MRI room and connected to all the detectors through a penetration panel. Gradient echo (GRE) and spin echo (SE) methods were used in an evaluation experiment on the simultaneous measurements. We observed no degradation of crystal identification and energy performances.
