The Japan Clinical Study Group of Particle Therapy (JCPT) studied\nthe achievements of the Japanese particle therapy from 2002 to 2014.\nThe JCPT member consisted of the twelve particle therapy institutions;\n(1) Southern Tohoku Proton Therapy Center, (2) Proton Medical Research\nCenter, University of Tsukuba, (3) Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical\nCenter (4) Division of Radiation Oncology and Particle therapy, National\nCancer\nCenter Hospital East, (5) Research Center for Charged Particle Therapy,\nNational Institute of Radiological Sciences, (6) Proton Therapy\nDivision, Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital, (7) The Wakasa Wan Energy\nResearch Center, (8) Fukui prefectural Hospital Proton Therapy Center,\n(9) Nagoya Proton Therapy Center, Nagoya City West Medical Center, (10)\nHyogo Ion Beam Medical center, (11) Ion Beam Therapy Center, SAGA HIMAT\nFoundation and (12) Medipolis Proton Therapy and Research Center. Our\nstudy group covered the all Japanese particle therapy institutions.\nThe aim of this paper is to develop the clinical database concerning\nwith Japanese particle therapy and to evaluate the feasibility of\nparticle therapy case database.\n\\nMethods:\nThe JCPT office gathered each institution’s annual report and analyzed\nthe number of treatments. Malignant primary tumors were classified into\nCNS, head and neck, lung, upper digestive organ, liver, pancreas,\ngynecological organ, prostate, bone and soft tissue, rectum and other or\nunclassified organs. Particle therapy was divided into a proton therapy\nand a carbon ion therapy.\nAt 2012 we decided that we should develop the clinical particle therapy\ndatabase for more precise analysis. We prepared the hardware and\nsoftware of the clinical database. Participating institutions send\nrecords of cases after anonymization (Fig. 1). JCPT office handled each\ndata in secure and safety environment. The office prepared a suitable\nconversion method from each hospital format to standard format.\n\\nResults:\nThe number of particle therapy treatment from 1979 to 2012 reached\n21,506. Numbers of patients treated by proton and carbon ion are 12,150\nand 9,356 showed in Fig.2. We defined the schema of database. This\nschema consists of (1) patient informations including primary lesion,\nstage, performance status, treatment purpose and (2) follow-up\ninformation including primary effect, recurrence and secondary effect.\nMany institutions cannot adapt to this schema of database. Some hospital\ndatabase systems do not contain the suitable fields corresponding to the\nJCPT database fields. We found that the collecting method from a\nproprietary database to the common database needs more consideration.\n\\nConclusions:\nWe reported the activity of Japanese particle therapy for more than 30\nyears. Moreover we think that the analysis of the particle therapy is\nvery important for the radiation oncology.
