This metal showed non-conservative mixing behavior with low or mid-salinity maxima. Distribution coefficients (Kd) of Co, which describes particle-water interactions of Co, decreased with increasing salinity, resulting from the competing and complexing effects of major ions in seawater and DOM. Thus, a laboratory experiment was undertaken by introducing riverine suspended particulate matter into estuarine seawater with/without ultra violet (UV)-irradiation to elucidate the effect of DOM in the particle-water interactions. The Kd in the estuarine seawater including DOM, was lower than that in the UV-irradiated estuarine seawater. This result indicates that complexation of Co with dissolved organic ligands is also important for particle-water interactions of Co.
