It is also known that melatonin significantly protects mice against whole-body X-ray irradiation. However, very little is known about the detailed mechanisms of such activities of melatonin. In this study, we demonstrate that melatonin scavenges galvinoxyl and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals via an electron transfer from melatonin to the radicals rather than via a one-step hydrogen atom transfer in methanol. The kinetic data together with the calculated thermodynamic parameters obtained in this study provide a detailed mechanistic insight into the antioxidative activities of melatonin., International Symposium on Free Radical Research: Contribution to Medicine}, title = {Reaction of Melatonin with Free Radicals in a Protic Medium and the Mechanism}, year = {2011} }
