Nitroxyl radicals are paramagnetic species, which also can be detected using T1-weighted MRI. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) react with nitroxyl radicals to lose paramagnetism. The time course of in vivo MRI intensity induced by a nitroxyl radical can give tissue redox information, which is the so called the redox imaging technique. Employing a membrane permeable nitroxyl radical, redox information in tissues could be available.
