[Patients and methods] We recruited pre-treatment biopsy samples of 143 patients. We designed 3 sets of patients to confirm our findings by microarray analysis. Immunohisochemical analysis (IHA) were also performed. [Results] The patients who all underwent radiotherapy. The statistical analysis for microarray data of 36 samples in 1st set formed mainly two clusters. Statistical test revealed 76 genes. Expression data of six representative genes, such as CK5, Nectin-1, CIDEB, AK091113.1 (SCC-type; up), TMEM98 and TACSTD1/EpCAM (AD; up) were confirmed by RT-PCR. IHA of EpCAM had strong positive immunoreactivity in AD (specificity; 90%, sensitivity; 80%), and its positive finding was related with prognosis (p = 0.048).
