It suggests that X-irradiation may affect proliferation of the neural stem cells during early neural development. Here we investigated the effects of the irradiation on the neural stem cells, prepared from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells by the Neural Stem Sphere (NSS) method. The proliferation of the neural stem cells cultured with fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) was dose-dependently inhibited by X-irradiation. Although X-irradiation also induced process elongation of the cells in a dose-dependent manner, gene expression of the marker genes for the neural stem cells, nestin, musashi-1, was maintained.
