Human telomerase reverse transcriptase\n(hTERT), the catalytic subunit of human telomerase, is responsible for the\nsynthesis and maintenance of the telomeric repeats at the distal ends of\nhuman chromosomes. Telomerase expression is repressed in normal human cells\nand activated in immortal cells and during tumorigenesis. However, the\nmechanism by which telomerase expression is regulated is not fully\nunderstood. There is increasing evidence that the mechanisms involved in\nmaintenance of telomeres, specialized structures at chromosome ends, are\nlinked with DNA damage response. We therefore investigated whether BRCA1\nfunction affects telomere maintenance. We found that irradiation,\nparticularly carbon ion irradiation, resulted in an increase in mRNA levels\nof BRCA1 and a decrease in mRNA levels of hTERT, accordingly, telomerase\nactivity was significantly repressed.
