Knowledge of the behavior of cesium (Cs) in the soil environment is important for assessing radionuclide mobility in soil and potential crop uptake. We used the clay mineral illite and humic acid (HA) to investigate the effect of HA on Cs sorption in illite. We carried out a batch sorption test and sequential extraction methods to determine the exchangeable Cs fraction, the organic matter-bound Cs fraction, and the fixed Cs fraction. The Freundlich isotherm was applied to sorption behavior of Cs in the mixtures independent of the illite to HA ratio. In addition, the distribution of Cs among the fractions varied with the illite to HA ratio of the mixture. HA apparently does not inhibit Cs fixation in illite, but we may have underestimated its blocking effect on Cs sorption at the regular exchange complex sites in the illite., 5th Interfaces against pollution 2008}, title = {Effect of humic acid on radiocesium sorption in illite}, year = {2008} }
