Furthermore, recent studies have shown that chewing causes activation of various brain regions, including prefrontal cortex. We therefore examined the influence of chewing on brain activities using fMRI. The subjects used were twenty to thirty aged healthy adults, being conducted continuously to 2-back task with intermittent gum-chewing. Gum without odors and taste component was used to remove effects other than chewing. The results indicated that chewing tended to increase the BOLD signals in the prefrontal area including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during 2-back task.
