These studies involved three types of images: SPECT images, three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3DSSP) images derived from the SPECT images, and Z-score of 3DSSP images. Methods: The materials were 52 I-123-IMP brain perfusion SPECT studies of healthy volunteers and AD patients. Five physicians judged the test dataset (SPECT, 3DSSP, and Z-score of 3DSSP images) as to whether the presented images were those of the AD patients, rated by five categories of certainty: definitely, possibly, equivocally, possibly not, and definitely not. The test statistics (?) of the test dataset by the CH observer were rated for ROC analysis. The areas under the curves (Az) according to the human and CH observers were compared for the three image types. Results: For the !\nthree image types, the best performance of Az by a human observer was achieved in the Z-score of 3DSSP images, and the Az of the SPECT images by the human observer were lower than those of the 3DSSP and Z-score of 3DSSP images. The Az determined by the CH observer resulted in the same trend as that of the human observer. Conclusions: The performance of the CH observer was similar to that of the human observers, dependin\non the image type.
